Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI)

Equity is important in science, as it is in broader society. We acknowledge that the Earth Sciences is one of the least diverse scientific fields in the United States. The Smith Lab group is committed to the equality of opportunity for all persons, inclusive of sex, gender, sexual identity, marital status, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, and veteran status. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive environment that supports all members of our lab. In line with this commitment, we support the department-wide equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives and highly encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply to join our group.

Are you interested in graduate school, but unsure of the steps necessary to apply? There are lots of resources online. This UCDavis Earth and Planetary Sciences website has a lot of good information and resources. Note that, in the Earth Sciences, graduate student tuition and fees are paid by the university, as is a teaching or research assistant stipend. Emmy Smith (efsmith@jhu.edu) is always happy to answer questions about the process of applying and ongoing projects in the lab.

Are you a high school student or undergrad interested in getting involved? Please send Emmy Smith (efsmith@jhu.edu) an email.
